Installing and Commissioning Fire & Gas Detection Systems
Installing and Commissioning Fire & Gas Detection Systems
The selected Open Path Gas Detector MUST be of a similar specification and complexity to that of the examples. The detector MUST comprise of a transmit/receive style of detector.
The Examiner should make available a range of function test equipment from which the candidate is required to select the appropriate equipment to carry out the test.
The Examiner is required to ensure that the Gas Detectors is operational but NOT aligned for the purpose of the test.
The Gas Detector should be installed at a height that requires the need for access platforms to commission.
The Examiner should make available to the Candidate a copy of a selection of vendor installation and commissioning manuals from which the candidate will need to select the appropriate one for the test.
Technical Assessment – The candidate is required to commission an Open Path Gas Detector and carry out a function check on completion. The Gas Detector will be installed but not aligned or operational. At the completion of the test the candidate must have commissioned the gas detector to a state of full operation.
Objective - To ensure a candidate has the skills, knowledge and ability to commission an Open Path Gas Detector in line with vendor instructions. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the dangers associated with working on live electrical equipment. The candidates will be allowed to make reference to vendor manuals to carry out the activity. A successful function test at the conclusion of commissioning will judge the level of success achieved. The candidate will have to demonstrate they can work safely whilst working at height following appropriate procedures.

Examiner Results Report
The candidate must commission and test the detector following vendor procedures to meet the specifications. The designed test area must have good lighting and be away from any production area. The final operational condition of the gas detector will be fundamental in the Examiners judgment on the candidate’s ability to PASS the test.
The candidate is expected to complete the test, being observed using correct tools and equipment to complete the test and using safe working practices to achieve a ‘PASS’. Where the candidate does not achieve the set criteria this is recorded as ‘REFERRED’ and a brief note recorded on the criteria not met in the test activity.
The candidate must record a PASS in all practical test sections and score a minimum of 80% in the multiple choice section.
