Calibrating and Function-Checking Temperature Measurement Systems
Calibrating and Function-Checking Temperature Measurement Systems
The selected Temperature Transmitter (0 – 100oC range) must be of a similar specification and complexity of construction to that of the example show. The transmitter must allow the candidate to make a 20% range change for the purpose of the test.
The Examiner will provide the candidate with the supplied Instrument Test Record (ITR04) that records the new specification. This includes the requirement to upload the Tag No and re-range the transmitter from 0 – 80 oC.
The Examiner should make available a range of Hand Held Communicators (Hart, Smart etc.), Temperature and Resistance Simulators from which the Candidate will be required to select the appropriate one for the re-configuration and recalibration of the pressure transmitter.
The Examiner should make available a range of crimp connectors from which the Candidate will need to select appropriate ones that are fit for purpose to commission the RTD.
The Examiner should make available to the Candidate a copy of a selection of vendor installation and commissioning manuals from which the candidate will need to select the appropriate one for the test.
Technical Assessment – To commission an RTD, assign a “Tag No” and calibrate a Temperature Transmitter to a pre-determined specification using an appropriate hand held communicator. The candidate will be provided with an Instrument Test Record (ITR) that gives all the required data for the test. Work MUST include a full function check of the temperature loop to the new specification using suitable test equipment with the results recorded on the supplied Instrument Test Record.
Objective - To ensure a candidate has the skills, knowledge and ability to reconfigure, calibrate and function check an electronic temperature transmitter. The candidate will have to demonstrate they can work safely throughout the work scope and complete the appropriate documentation to the required standard.

Examiner Results Report
The candidate must reconfigure the temperature transmitter to take a 3 wire RTD, to the specified range and assign a tag number in line with the Instrument Test Record ITR04. On completion of the reconfiguration the candidate MUST carry out function check using a suitable test medium. Calibration MUST be within +/- 0.5%
The candidate is expected to complete the test whilst being observed using correct the correct tools, equipment, service supplies and established techniques, to achieve the specification. The activity must be completed using safe working practices to achieve a „PASS‟. Where the candidate does not achieve the set criteria this is recorded as „REFERRED‟ and a brief note recorded on the criteria not met in the test activity.
The candidate must record a PASS in all practical test sections and score a minimum of 80% in the multiple choice section.
